IIP STATEMENT
Since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Iran has been governed as an Islamic Republic that asserts authority over institutions through religion. In recent years, however, widespread protests have reflected growing public frustration with political repression, economic hardship, and limited political participation. In addition to the tense domestic situation, tensions between Iran and regional actors—especially Israel—had been rising for some time, escalating into a short war in June 2025. This exchange, although halted after 12 days, evolved into a wider conflict in early 2026. On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel conducted military strikes on Iran, and on March 2, 2026, they struck Hezbollah in Lebanon, marking the beginning of a hot war in the region.
Iran remains central to the region’s political and security dynamics, yet it faces profound internal strains: mounting external pressure, economic decline, and growing demands from society for greater political participation, rights, and social justice. In this complex environment, careful analysis and open dialogue are essential.
The International Institute for Peace (IIP) is committed to promoting peaceful conflict resolution, dialogue, and international cooperation. As an independent research institute and forum for discussion, the IIP seeks to deepen understanding of developments in Iran and their regional and global implications. We believe sustainable peace and stability are achievable only through diplomacy, dialogue, and nonviolent conflict resolution. We also recognize the vital roles of civil society, intellectual debate, and cultural exchange in driving long-term political and social transformation. Finally, we emphasize the need for international engagement that prioritizes de‑escalation, regional stability, and respect for human rights.
