1979, when the INTARNATIONAL was funded, the SPÖ under Bruno Kreisky obtained the absolute majority in the parliamentary elections – for the last time. Since then, the party has been in decline, as have other traditional leftist parties across Europe, albeit to varying degrees (the Greek Pasok e.g. having nearly disappeared) and with some exceptions and recent recoveries (such as British labour under Jeremy Corbyn or the red bloc in Denmark). But also relatively new leftist movements, projects and parties such as Die Linke in Germany, La France Insoumise in France or Syriza in Greece seem to have difficulties in maintaining or increasing their support and impact. In some instances, green parties appear to take over, as polls indicate for Germany. In the formerly communist-run countries in the east, leftist parties are almost extinct.
What are the causes for such a decline and difficulties and could and should they be addressed? Can the obvious lack of vigour and orientation of established but also newer leftist movements be overcome? How could one cope with right populism and its voters? How could one profit from the indisputable crisis of neo-liberalism?
This and other questions will be addressed during the discussion.
The Discussion will be held in English.
