Dedicated to the International Women’s Day, the talk with Angela Kane will look at various aspects of diplomacy and conflict resolution from a standpoint of a practitioner who served in a range of posts at the United Nations for almost four decades. Angela Kane will share her personal experiences from working in UN civilian peacekeeping missions; high-level negotiations in the conflict environment; leadership in international efforts to establish facts in situations where information supplied by different conflict sides is biased and incomplete; and challenges and opportunities in promoting peace that UN system - driven by member states’ policies - is facing. We will also discuss why engagement of women in diplomacy and conflict resolution is important and how it has changed over the years.

About Angela Kane: Until mid-2015, Mrs. Kane served as the United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs. She was responsible for planning, negotiating and conducting the ground-breaking investigation of alleged chemical weapons use in Syria in 2013, which resulted in Syria’s destruction of its chemical stocks. Previously, Mrs. Kane served as the Under-Secretary-General for Management, heading the largest and most complex UN department, with responsibility for the global financial and budgetary management of the UN (2008-2012). Mrs. Kane also served as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, focusing on the prevention and resolution of conflicts in all regions except Africa. She also was the Assistant Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management. Her field experience includes Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), a special assignment to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and multi-year postings in Indonesia and Thailand.

The discussion will be held in English.
