According to data released by the World Bank, China is now the second largest economy by GDP. Only in the first quarter of 2019, the economy expanded at 6,4% if compared to the same period from a year earlier. But the economy is only one factor. When looking at its role in the international system, trends show that, under President Xi Jinping, China has become more ambitious, confident and assertive in its foreign policy. Following the slogan: “community of shared future for mankind”, China has launched a series of programs such as the Belt and Road Initiative, a huge investment in infrastructures to connect China with Europe. This goes together with other initiatives such as investments in developing countries in Africa, a strategy that does not require political conditionality related to human rights or democracy but high guarantees for the money landed. Finally, President Xi Jinping has made clear his intention to modernize the Chinese military system by 2035 and the attempt to play a more and more predominant role in South-East Asia. Just recently China launched his first foreign military base in Djibouti / Eastern Africa.
These factors pose a series of questions like What will be the role of China, in the near future, in international relations? Is Chinese new involvement in foreign policy a threat or opportunity to international stability? How could/should the international community react to the Chinese strategy? Which initiatives could maintain peace in the region? These and other questions will be addressed during the panel discussion.
