CONTENT
As the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, calls for reform intensify amid institutional and geopolitical challenges. With António Guterres leaving as Secretary-General at the end of 2026, the search for his successor is already underway.
This public panel will discuss the UN’s evolving role under a new Secretary-General, the rise of alternative mechanisms such as the Board of Peace, and shifting approaches from the current US administration. Are these trends strengthening global peace and security, or fragmenting the UN’s Charter-mandated role? How can the UN maintain legitimacy as powerful states act unilaterally, and what does effective multilateral leadership look like when powerful states violate international law?
The discussion will examine whether multilateralism can be recalibrated for today’s realities, or if it is being fundamentally reshaped by geopolitical competition.
