The UN and the Nuclear Threat: A Career Perspective from Angela Kane

What does it take to enter the United Nations and rise to its highest levels of leadership? How does the organization confront today’s most serious threats to international peace and security? And, in an era of growing nuclear risks, what role can diplomacy play in preventing conflict and preserving peace?
In the first part of this lecture, Angela Kane, former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs and Vice President of the International Institute for Peace (IIP) in Vienna, will reflect on her distinguished 35-year career at the United Nations. She will discuss the key moments and experiences that shaped her career, from her early work in the UN to her leadership at the highest levels of the organization. Her reflections will offer a rare insight into the inner workings of international organizations, including the professional milestones she reached and the challenges she encountered throughout her career.
The second part of the session will turn to the UN’s efforts to advance nuclear non-proliferation and maintain international peace and security. Drawing on her experience as the UN’s High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Angela Kane will examine the institutional mechanisms through which the UN addresses global nuclear risks, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs. She will explore how these frameworks function in practice, and how the UN seeks to navigate today’s complicated security environment while advancing diplomatic efforts toward long-term international stability.
The lecture will conclude with an open Q&A, offering participants the opportunity to discuss the future of nuclear security and learn more about pursuing their own careers in international affairs.
